FAQs

What skill level are the courses for?

Jewellery courses and classes are suitable for all abilities – whether jewellery is a new interest, you’re looking to learn a new technique or wanting to brush up on an old one. The specialist Casting course is for those with at least some experience of jewellery making. The maximum number of students on any course is 5 to ensure that everyone receives individually-tailored tuition.

What can I expect to learn?

Beginners will start with learning the basic, important silver-smithing techniques like measuring, piercing, soldering, filing and polishing. More advanced students can pursue techniques such as stone setting, surface finishes, etching, enamelling, reticulation and lathe work. Please get in touch if you have any specific requests or questions.

Can I buy a course as a gift?

Gift Cards for a jewellery course make thoughtful presents for friends and family who are looking to try a new craft, or develop an existing, creative skill. Course Gift Cards are available, for a variety of amounts, from the Shop and can be personalised with your message.

How do I book a course?

Select the course you would like to book and click on the red text link to ‘make an enquiry or book this course’. This opens up an email to Jinks and Suzy with your preferred course automatically as the subject heading, please send your message along with any questions. We can then reserve your place for 2 days and send you details for payment by bank transfer. On receipt of the course fees we will send you a letter confirming your place on the course.

What should I bring on a course?

The workshop is fully equipped with jewellery-making tools and machinery. You are welcome to bring your own tools but it is not necessary! If you require jewellery-making materials Jinks can supply, at cost, some silver, copper and stones. All you need to bring is an apron and an idea of what you’d like to make or learn to make!

When are new courses announced?

Course programmes for the following year are published on the website each October/November. If you would like to be one of the first to receive announcement of the Course programme each year, and sometimes news of late availability, please sign up to the mailing list below.

Can I have private tuition?

1:1 or 2:1 private tuition with Jinks can very occasionally be offered if there is a special reason you are unable to attend regular courses. Please get in contact for pricing.

I live far away, where can I stay?

Students come from all around the country as well as abroad. Should you need a place to stay we have a self-catering cottage The Dairy and Shepherd’s Hut. Please also ask for our list of local, recommended places to stay that includes campsites, self-catering cottages, B&Bs and Hotels.

Reviews

“Jinks is so patient, knowledgeable and encouraging. I have learned all sorts of techniques and have never heard Jinks say anything is too difficult to do. It doesn’t matter what level you are you will always come away with something you are really pleased with. She makes it all so very enjoyable.”

— Land, 4-day Course

“I’ve returned to Jinks courses many times, you get a lot of direct teaching support. Jinks is a highly skilled jeweller and is very experienced at teaching. She sets the perfect balance between expertly guiding you and ensuring that she doesn’t take over and you learn how to do it. The workshop is in an idyllic setting and you get access to all the tools and materials you need. It’s the perfect way to spend a weekend.”

— Sarah, Term-time Classes

“I look forward to the courses so much. I have made things that I never thought I would be able to do. Because of the small number of students on the courses you get plenty of time to ask questions and get to really understand how to do things. The setting is fabulous and on top of that she serves up the most delicious lunches in her fairy-tale barn.”

— Dominic, 3-day Course

Booking Terms & Conditions

The full jewellery course fee will be required to confirm a place on a course. The course fee comprises a 50% deposit and 50% balance.

The 50% deposit is non-returnable on cancellation at any point, under any circumstance.
However if, on cancellation, you choose to book on to a future course with availability (and that runs within 12 months) your 50% deposit can be transferred across. Should you then cancel the course that uses the transferred deposit, the 50% deposit is then retained.

The 50% balance is returnable only if cancellation is 17 days or more before the course start date.
The 50% balance is non-returnable, under any circumstances, if cancellation is within 17 days of the course start date. It may be worth your while to take out an insurance against such last minute cancellations.

We reserve the right to cancel a course (eg. due to tutor illness or an insufficient number of students to make a course viable) or to change the duration of a course – in the event of cancellation all course fees paid will be refunded or, if preferred, transferred to a future course with availability.
